How Much Does It Cost to Hire a PA System in Christchurch?

"How much for a PA?" is probably the most common question we get. The honest answer is: it depends. Not in a dodgy way. It's just that the cost of hiring a PA in Christchurch changes a lot depending on a few key things. A pair of speakers on sticks for a 21st is a very different job to a full line array rig for 2,000 people at Hagley Park.

We've put together this guide to give you a rough idea of what drives the price and what kind of ballpark to expect. These aren't fixed prices (every event is different), but they should help you budget before you get in touch for a proper quote.

What Affects the Cost

There are a handful of things that shift the price up or down. Knowing which ones apply to your event will help you understand the quote when you get one.

• Size of the system. A small pair of powered tops for a birthday party costs a fraction of what a full PA with subs, monitors, and a mixing desk costs. The bigger the crowd and the louder you need it, the more gear is involved.
• Indoor vs outdoor. Outdoor events need more power because there are no walls to contain the sound. Wind and open space eat up volume fast. You'll generally need a bigger rig outside than you would for the same crowd indoors.
• Hire duration. Most of our PA hires are for a single day or overnight. Multi-day hires (festivals, exhibitions, weekend events) cost more, but the daily rate usually comes down.
• Delivery and pickup. If we're dropping gear to a venue in central Christchurch, delivery is straightforward. If the event is out in Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, or further into Canterbury, there's a delivery charge based on distance.
• Operator included or not. Dry hire (you pick it up or we drop it off, and you run it yourself) is cheaper. If you want one of our sound engineers to run the desk for the night, that adds to the cost, but it also means the PA will sound a lot better and you don't have to worry about it.
• Extras. Microphones, foldback monitors, DI boxes, mic stands, cables. These are often included in packages, but if you need a bunch of radio mics for speeches or a monitor mix for a band, it'll add to the total.

• Single speaker (e.g. QSC K12.2 on a stick, suited to small speeches or a house party): From $70
• Small PA (two tops on sticks, suited to 30-80 people indoors): From $150
• Mid-size PA (tops and subs, suited to 100-300 people): $400-$800
• Large PA (line array or stacked system for 300+ people): From $1,500+ (quoted per job)
• Sound engineer for the event: Quoted based on duration and complexity
• Delivery within Christchurch: Included in most packages, or from $50 for standalone hires

What's Usually Included

When you hire a PA system from us, the quote typically covers the speakers, amplification (if it's a passive system), and the basic cabling to connect everything. If you're adding a mixing desk, microphones, or monitors, we'll list those separately so you can see what's what.

We also do packages. If you're running a school ball, wedding, or corporate event, it often makes more sense to bundle the PA with lighting, a DJ, or a speaker setup for presentations. Packages tend to work out cheaper than hiring each thing individually.

Dry Hire vs Operated

If you know your way around a mixing desk and just need the gear, dry hire keeps the cost down. We'll drop off, show you how to set it up (or set it up for you), and pick it up the next day. For anything more than a simple tops-on-sticks setup, though, we'd recommend having one of our crew run it. Getting the most out of a PA takes some know-how, especially in tricky rooms or outdoor spaces.
